ET 5170 Process Instrumentation and Control for Mechatronic Systems 3.0 Credits

This course introduces the fundamentals of instrumentation and process control used in engineering systems. It covers process variables, types of industrial processes, and the structure of a standard process control loop using block diagrams. It also covers transducers calibration, actuators, and signal conditioning circuits, including passive circuits such as Wheatstone bridges and active amplifier-based circuits. The course also examines sensors and actuators for measuring and controlling temperature, pressure, flow, level, light, position, rotation, and torque. Finally, students study open- and closed-loop control systems, focusing on set point, feedback, error, and system response, and analyze the operation of on/off and PID closed-loop control strategies commonly used in engineering applications.
