GSST 2035 Black Women in Contemporary Art 3.0 Credits
Scholars have long highlighted the ways that visual art made by black women can serve as a meaningful intellectual, political, and aesthetic contribution to black feminist praxis. Accordingly, this course examines the work and working contexts of contemporary black women artists while questioning the complex implications of the visual for black women's lives. This course asks: how do black women artfully interrogate matters like race, place, embodiment, beauty, pleasure, injury, the idea of the Human, and everyday radical rebellion? Combining art history and black feminist theory, this class explores the work of black women artists practicing from 1965 to the present.
