GSST 2059 Topics in Gender, Sexuality, Media and Culture 3.0 Credits
This is a variable topics course that critically examines questions of gender and sexuality within mass media and other forms of popular culture (including consumer culture and the digital commons). Engaging theoretical texts and cultural objects, we ask: How have culture-makers responded to, theorized, and troubled the histories and stakes of gender and sexuality? Where in popular culture can we see issues of gender and sexuality treated as a social and political conundrum, as a weapon, as an instrument, as a complex aspiration and disavowal, as a plaything, as its own general concern? How might we recognize mass art, culture, and expression as valuable within and beyond consumer pleasure? This class may take on a more specified focus (e.g. “Gender in Black Popular Culture”) depending on the faculty.
