HIST 1190 The Modern World 3.0 Credits

How did the world look after Columbus arrived in the Americas, Mughals took control of much of South Asia, and the Ming expanded the Great Wall of China? How did Empires hold together vast expanses of land and people? How did they interact? How did the world industrialize? How did people resist colonial power? Why should we study these things today? Students engage historical human actors, such as travelers or intellectuals, but also non-humans like commodities (sugar and silver), diseases, machines, or floods. They probe the power of historical knowledge to navigate current events, such as climate change or labor conditions.
