HIST 1420 Introduction to Islam 3.0 Credits
This course provides the student with a foundational understanding of Islam as a religion and as a historical, cultural, and intellectual tradition. Covering Islam's origins in seventh-century Arabia, the course examines core beliefs, practices, texts, and institutions, the formation of the Classical Synthesis, and debates that shaped Muslim societies over time. The course traces Islamic history through the modern period, concluding with Islam's encounters with modernity and contemporary challenges. Students develop skills in historical analysis, critical reading, and comparative religious inquiry, enabling informed engagement with Islam in global and contemporary contexts.
