HIST 1832 History of Modern Biology 3.0 Credits
This course surveys the history of biology from 1700 to the present. It explores the how the concept of life was studied in a wide range of disciplines, including natural history approaches, field studies, and laboratory-based sciences. Exploring both the content of these disciplines and their social and cultural contexts, it combines biographies of major pioneers, their intellectual work, communities, and institutions including universities, laboratories, field stations, and museums. Examples of themes include the natural theology, the Darwinian revolution, genetics, the origin of life, and sociobiology.
