HIST 2010 The Study of History 3.0 Credits
This is a course on historiography. Through intense reading and collective discussion, students examine different ways of writing history, forms of tinkering with periodization and spatial scales, choices of historical actors, and historians’ political commitments. All the historians under study have strong opinions on what history is about, why it matters, and how it should be written. They come from different backgrounds, and their historiographic approaches might be in conflict, but they all have produced enticing works of history. More than trying to cover all historiographic debates, the course is designed to inspire students to become reflexive makers of historical knowledge.
