HIST 2150 History of Antisemitism 3.0 Credits

For centuries, Jews were marked as outsiders and endured periods of prejudice and persecution. Jews have been vilified for denying the divinity of Jesus Christ, unjustly marked as murderers, usurers, and villains; condemned for their supposed role in defiling and undermining the “white race”; and accused of committing the greatest abuses of capitalism, and at the same time, of inventing socialism and communism. How did antisemitism start? Why is it so enduring? How is it similar to and different from other forms of animus? Students examine the religious, racial, political, and economic forms of antisemitism in the ancient, medieval, and modern world and its transformation in diverse global centers.
