HIST 2240 African Europe 3.0 Credits
This course examines the historical and contemporary presence of Africans and people of African descent in Europe. It explores enslavement, migration and labor, mobility and culture, colonialism and political activism, art, intellectual and political life, as well as everyday experiences of Black and African Europeans. Students learn of the diversity of diasporic experiences and how Africans have shaped European societies while navigating systems of exclusion, oppression, and racism while creating spaces of belonging. By engaging with diverse material sources, the course aims to challenge narratives that too often portray Europe as an historically homogenous geography.
