HIST 2440 Jewish History in the United States 3.0 Credits
This course surveys Jewish life in America from the colonial period until the present. Students examine social, cultural, political, and economic factors that effected an ethno-religious sub-group, including periods of acceptance and periods of marginalization. Students also look at cohesion and division within the community. The study of this one community offers insight into other broader historical trends in American history including immigration, acculturation, minority rights, prejudice and discrimination, and intergroup and intra-group relations. Students will engage with the many institutions, individuals and groups , as well as individuals, in the Philadelphia area to research for themselves some elements of the Jewish experience.
