HIST 2470 Modern Jewish History 3.0 Credits
This course explores the history of the Jews from approximately 1500. It examines the Jewish experience in Moslem and Christian host societies, and the kaleidoscopic array of Jewish political, religious, cultural and social responses to diasporic life. Topics include new forms of Jewish communal and individual life and consciousness which emerged in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries; the extension of this new modern framework to the Jews of the Middle East in the context of European imperialism and colonialism; key roles played by the Jews as agents and symbols of political, economic, and cultural modernity; the extreme shifts in Jewish life from the mid-20th century in light of the Holocaust, the creation of the state of Israel, and integration into American society.
