HIST 2720 The American Civil War and Reconstruction 3.0 Credits

Americans continue to debate the meaning of the Civil War as part of a long, and sometimes even violent, struggle over historical memory, including in education and public policy. In this course, students study the domestic and global contexts, causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War, including post-war Reconstruction and the Jim Crow overturning of the post-war settlement. May include cultural, diplomatic, economic, military, and political histories. Through these studies of history, memory, and historical documents, students work towards their own understandings of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
