HIST 2821 History of Science to the Scientific Revolution 3.0 Credits
The history of science is more than a history of an intellectual tradition. It is also a history of how people have sought to create, defend, control, and challenge knowledge in different times and places. Exploring that complexity in the past provides a better understanding of science in the present and future as well. This course surveys aspects of the history of science (broadly understood) from antiquity into the 1700s and asks what people investigated about their world, how, and why. How did social, economic, cultural, or political factors shape what questions were asked, who got to answer them, and what answers were acceptable? The course ends by examining the idea of the early modern Scientific Revolution to see what did, or did not, get revolutionized.
