HIST 3180 The Vietnam War 3.0 Credits
The wars in Vietnam, as well as debates over the causes and meanings of those wars, continue to shape American and Vietnamese domestic politics, foreign affairs, culture, and even people’s health decades later. This course offers a global history of the Second Indochina War in the context of Chinese, Vietnamese, and French imperialisms, as well as of World War II and the Cold War. Students learn the major schools of historical interpretation about the war as they develop their own answers to major historical questions about the war. Through this study, students learn to engage in historical debate that recognizes multiple perspectives and the uncertainty of evidence. Students will develop their writing skills, but should have prior college writing experience.
