HIST 3250 Silences in African History 3.0 Credits

This course is inspired by the work of Jacques Depelchin's Silences in African History, a critical work that interrogates conventional narratives of African history. Central to the course are Depelchin's concepts of the "syndrome of discovery" and the "syndrome of abolition." Through these frameworks, the course explores the mechanisms that have produced historical silences. The course also examines how historical disciplines such as anthropology, economics, literature, or media studies have participated in these silencing processes, intentionally or not. Students learn to "read the silences" critically, identifying what is omitted, why it may have been suppressed, and how alternative sources can help recover suppressed knowledges. Variable scheduling.
