HIST 3865 Climate Change, Energy, and Colonialism 3.0 Credits

When did climate change begin? With the steam engines of the eighteenth century, with the plantations of the sixteenth century or with the Pennsylvania oil fields of the twentieth century? Or did it start when scientists had the computational power to speak of global climate change as a matter of fact? Why does history, and colonial history in particular, matter to make sense of current climate conditions? This course explores how humans and climate interacted throughout modern history focusing on the non-humans essential to such relations, such as coal, sugar, water, eucalyptus, or satellites. Students learn how to write history that includes non-humans: a fundamental tool to engage climate pasts, present, and futures.
