HMP 5001 Healthcare and Public Health Policy and Programs in the United States 3.0 Credits
This course provides an overview of public health and healthcare systems in the United States and interactions between them, including the roles of key federal agencies, state and local governments, healthcare and insurance providers, and non-governmental partners. Students will examine the ways that policy making affects the underlying determinants of personal and community health, the nature of public health and healthcare programs and services, and trends in health disparities. Course themes will be illustrated by considering the impacts of differences in the values and priorities of recent Presidential administrations and by drawing on examples from various health domains, including infectious diseases, chronic diseases, maternal and child health, injuries, and others.
