HMP 5012 Policy Advocacy and Social Justice: Theory and Practice 3.0 Credits
In public health, practitioners often strive to change policy, hoping to make the world a healthier, fairer place. Students, however, are rarely taught how. This course covers the theory and practice of fighting for social justice and better policy: why policies matter, who makes them and why, and how generations of advocates and organizers have fought transformative public health battles and won. Students will learn to analyze changemakers’ theories of change; their tactics; and how they frame and shape policy fights. This is all intended to help students move into policymaking and advocacy (broadly defined), making informed decisions about how they want to help win policy changes that shape population health for the better.
