HMP 8002 Legal Aspects of Public Health 3.0 Credits
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of public health law in the United States. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the American constitutional structure and its effects on public health policy. Through lecture, dedicated discussion, reading materials, and case-based assignments, students develop knowledge of key legislative acts, legal doctrines, and cases across a range of substantive public health domains. Ethical considerations for public health practice, including balancing tradeoffs between state power and individual liberties feature throughout. Topics areas include public health insurance programs, disease prevention, provider regulation, food safety, administrative law, and contemporary approaches to legal epidemiology and research.
