Introduces the fundamental paradigmatic and technical principles of data science. Covers data science lifecycles, data collection and documentation, data types and formats, basic exploratory analysis, and fundamentals of data science programming in Python, with an emphasis on organizing, understanding, and describing data in preparation for further analysis and modeling. Covers practical data science computing fundamentals, including command-line operations, version control, and computational notebooks, along with data science project lifecycle, scoping and design, data provenance and governance, and other topics needed to apply data science techniques in real organizational settings.

URBS 5310 What is a City? 3.0 Credits
This seminar provides a critical understanding of how cities function. Students learn about the intersections of public, private, and nonprofit forces in urban governance. In this course, students will engage with Philadelphia area urban leaders, gaining insight into the processes behind the scenes that shape city form and function. Starting from the urban scale, this course explores how cities navigate their relationship to counties, states and federal governments. Students will also grapple with the complex dynamics between politics and the market as it pertains to thriving cities.

In order to graduate, all students must pass three writing-intensive courses after their freshman year. Two writing-intensive courses must be in a student's major. The third can be in any discipline. Students are advised to take one writing-intensive class each year, beginning with the sophomore year, and to avoid “clustering” these courses near the end of their matriculation. Transfer students need to meet with an academic advisor to review the number of writing-intensive courses required to graduate.
