IS 8940 Theory Development in Information Science 1.0 Credit

Research in information science is expected to make a theoretical contribution, yet how to do so may seem mysterious. This seminar provides an introduction to theorizing in information science (and the social sciences generally) through both analysis and hands-on work. Students will examine and discuss past theoretical work by scholars in the field to understand the qualities of strong theory, as well as learn practical techniques for theorizing: from spotting opportunities for theory to actually doing the work. The seminar will cover both entirely conceptual research and building theory from empirical findings. The seminar is suitable for students from all backgrounds.
