JWST 2460 History of the Holocaust 3.0 Credits
This course examines the Holocaust – the term commonly used to denote the destruction of European Jewry during World War II – within the context of twentieth-century European and Jewish history. Students examine Nazi Germany's systematic attempt to alienate and exterminate the Jews of Europe; they explore perpetrators and their relevant ideological and administrative systems, victims and intended victims, and "bystanders", those among whom the roundups and extermination took place in Europe. Students also consider how, after the war, survivors, communities, and nations grappled with memory and responsibility, and the ways the Holocaust reshaped international law, human rights discourse, and cultural production.
