JWST 3920 Pirates, Planters, Traders: The Jewish Atlantic World 3.0 Credits
The expansion of Europe to the Americas opened opportunities for Jews, who had long been relegated to a marginalized position in Europe. Students investigate the ways in which Jews participated in colonial environments in the 16th-18th centuries: their business pursuits; the ways they established communities in New World locations; their interactions with Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans; their status in diverse New World environments; and the ways they created hybrid communities in environments formerly devoid of Jewish life.
