MEM 4340 Aerodynamics 3.0 Credits

This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of aerodynamics during subsonic flight, beginning with the governing equations of incompressible inviscid flow and leading to the aerodynamic performance of airfoils, wings, and aircraft. Students apply potential flow theory to analyze elementary two‑dimensional flows using superposition techniques. The course introduces classical thin‑airfoil theory, vortex dynamics, and applies these concepts to finite‑span wings through Prandtl’s lifting‑line theory. Additional topics include boundary layer theory, skin-friction and form drag, as well as the operation of high-lift devices, and an introduction to aerodynamics during supersonic flight.
