MEM 4422 Introduction to Composite Materials 3.0 Credits

This course introduces the structure, processing, and mechanical behavior of composite materials, with emphasis on constituent properties, micromechanics, anisotropy, and failure mechanisms. Students examine lamina stiffness and compliance, plane stress and strain, test methods, and classical failure criteria. The course covers laminated plate theory, the influence of stacking sequence on stiffness and strength, and environmental effects on performance. Common manufacturing processes and material‑selection trade‑offs are discussed, with applications in aerospace, automotive, civil, and energy systems.
