MEM 5601 Advanced Solid Mechanics I 3.0 Credits
This course introduces the foundations of continuum mechanics for deformable solids and fluids. Topics include kinematics of deformation in Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks, deformation gradient, strain and stretch tensors, and the theory of stress with principal values and invariants. Balance laws of mass, momentum, and energy are developed along with the fundamentals of continuum thermodynamics. Constitutive modeling is introduced for elastic, hyperelastic, viscous, and viscoelastic materials. Emphasis is placed on tensor calculus, mathematical structure of the governing equations, and applications in solid mechanics and multiphysics systems.
