MEM 5701 Advanced Dynamics I 3.0 Credits

This course develops advanced analytical dynamics for modeling and analyzing mechanical systems. Topics include the principle of virtual work, Lagrange’s equations, conservation laws, the Jacobi first integral, ignoration of coordinates, and stability analysis via perturbations about steady motion. The course examines holonomic and non‑holonomic constraints, including classification and solution strategies using constraint embedding (elimination) and constraint adjoining (Lagrange multipliers). Additional topics include generalized impulse and momentum and formulation of constrained multibody systems. Emphasis is placed on analytical structure, coordinate selection, and physical interpretation of motion.
