MEM 6570 Introduction to Composite Materials 3.0 Credits
This course introduces the mechanics and behavior of composite materials at both the lamina and laminate levels. Topics include anisotropic elasticity; stress-strain relations for a lamina; engineering elastic constants; stiffness and compliance formulations; plane‑stress and plane‑strain behavior; and experimental methods for characterization. Micromechanics models, failure criteria, and strength prediction are presented. Classical laminated‑plate theory is developed, including laminate stiffness/compliance, effects of stacking sequence, and tailoring of elastic performance. Applications and selected current research topics in composite materials are also discussed.
Repeat Status: Not repeatable for credit
