MEM 7001 Advanced Computational Design Optimization 3.0 Credits

This course introduces the foundations of computational design optimization by integrating continuum mechanics, finite element methods, and design sensitivity analysis with modern optimization theory. Students derive governing equations in a continuum mechanics framework, discretize them for finite element analysis, and formulate design sensitivity expressions. These methods are used to couple analysis with optimization for structural and material design, inverse and identification problems, and reliability studies. The course also develops the mathematical and algorithmic fundamentals of topology optimization and its application to linear and nonlinear solid mechanics.
