MIP 240 Independent Music Culture 3.0 Credits

Independent music has formed the backbone of the music industry for over one hundred years. This course provides an overview of the relationship between independent music, culture, and society and the important role that independent labels play in fostering that relationship. Music’s social power and influence on culture will be explored in addition to a theoretical perspective on what it means to be independent and why artists and labels choose to operate independently. In addition to understanding the influence of music on culture, this course will also take a look at the role that institutions and power structures play in the music we listen to and how that may impact society and culture.
