MIP 3840 Cities of Music and Culture 3.0 Credits

This course examines the relationship between music, place, and cultural identity through study of cities with significant music industry presence and cultural heritage. Students explore how geographic location, cultural communities, and local music scenes influence music creation, business practices, and career opportunities. Topics include regional music industry ecosystems, cultural tourism, music heritage preservation, and the role of music in urban development. Through case studies, virtual and possible in-person site visits, and comparative analysis of music cities, students develop understanding of music's cultural significance while examining diverse career pathways across geographic contexts. The course may include experiential learning opportunities in selected music cities.
