MSE 3001 Mechanical Behavior of Solids 3.0 Credits

Introduces the principles governing how materials deform and fail under mechanical loading, with emphasis on structure–property relationships across metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. Topics include stress and strain in 3D, isotropic and anisotropic elasticity, viscoelasticity, plastic yielding and flow criteria, fracture and toughening mechanisms, linear elastic fracture mechanics, creep, fatigue, environmental effects, and the statistical nature of strength in brittle and defect-sensitive materials. Students learn to evaluate mechanical performance, understand failure modes, and apply materials selection and design methodologies for components operating under real-world conditions.
