This course addresses the quantitative research paradigm, focusing on the understanding of rigorous, well-constructed studies to inform evidence-based nursing. The research process and its major components are examined to prepare students for critically appraising quantitative studies. Students learn to identify threats to validity and to recognize Type 1 and 2 errors. Course content assists in accurately identifying research study designs to ensure critical appraisal tools are used to make decisions about the applicability and utility. Theoretical consistency is examined and high-frequency concerns, including power analyses, sampling plans, instrumentation selection, reliability and validity, are reviewed to prepare students to appraise, synthesize and apply research findings to practice problems.
