PBHL 3003 Introduction to Epidemiology 3.0 Credits
This class provides a foundation for studying the distribution and determinants of health in populations, with an emphasis on real-world examples that illustrate how evidence is generated and used. The course introduces key epidemiologic concepts, including measures of disease burden, approaches to defining and comparing health problems, principles of study design, and criteria for assessing causal relationships. Students will learn to evaluate data sources, interpret population health patterns, and consider the ethical issues involved in producing and using epidemiologic evidence. Drawing on case studies from history and current events, the course presents epidemiology as a lens for examining how health is patterned across society, how inequalities arise, and how evidence informs public health action.
