PBHL 3032 Fundamentals of Clinical Research 3.0 Credits

This course presents the foundational principles, skills, and methods of clinical research related to questions in clinical settings and patient populations. The class will start with how to frame a clinical research question, then cover the methods of clinical research, sources of error, and the basics of critically appraising clinical trials. Topics include smart searching of the literature, study design, diagnostic testing, clinical measurement for research, interpreting results of clinical studies, and identifying and controlling for confounding in research studies; all of which involve skills that are foundational for participating in clinical research projects. The course includes a special focus on the ethical and methodological aspects of clinical trials, which are vital to the practice of medicine.
