PHTO 2006 History of Photography I 3.0 Credits
This course provides an overview of the technological, cultural, and aesthetic history of photography, from its origins in the 1830s through the Modern era. The focus is on understanding and appreciating the work of major photographic artists, critics, and movements from the 19th and 20th centuries. The class explores the medium's complex history as a scientific marvel, an artistic practice, a powerful tool for social commentary, and a form of mass communication. Students will learn to recognize different styles and genres and to articulate the various uses of photographic imagery. Through lectures, readings, and visual analysis, students will develop a critical understanding of how photographs have shaped and reflected broader historical and cultural contexts.
