PHYS 6831 Biophysics 3.0 Credits

This biophysics course, which requires prior understanding of calculus-based thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, features applications of various physical models: the two-state model, random walk, and lattice model to biomolecules, i.e. proteins, DNA, and lipids, to explain biological phenomena in a living cell. Topics include conformational dynamics of proteins and DNA, opening and closing of ion channels, cooperative binding, conformational phase transitions, lipid vesicles, biological membranes, electrostatics of salty solutions, cell architecture, diffusive dynamics of biomolecules, crowding, and the rate equation paradigm underlying conformational transformations.
