POLS 3019 Parties and Elections 3.0 Credits
Elections are fundamental to American democracy, politics, and governance; and political parties are fundamental to elections – though there is a strong tradition in American politics of trying to remove the influence of parties from elections. This course provides an in-depth examination of the relationship between parties and elections in American political development. Specific topics include: Types of electoral systems; the mechanics of elections; party systems in US history; the organizational structure of political parties and how that structure has changed over time; and the contemporary role of parties in American politics.
