SMT 605 Sports Economics 3.0 Credits
Sports are economic goods and as such subject to the laws of demand and supply; production is organized and distributed to customers who evaluate consuming sports in consideration with other economic choices. This course will apply economic principles to analyze a wide range of issues within the realm of professional sports and intercollegiate athletics. Appropriate examination of sports economics requires the introduction of some advanced fields of specialization within economics. These include industrial organization, labor economics, and public finance. Students will be introduced to a variety of sports economics topics including sports markets—demand, supply and pricing, monopoly power and market failure in sports, labor markets and labor relations, and the public finance of sport facilities.
