SOC 2040 Urban Sociology 3.0 Credits
This course broadly analyzes cities and urban phenomena in preindustrial, industrial, and postindustrial societies with an emphasis on European and U.S. urbanization. Specifically, students will explore how economic, political, and social forces have shaped urban growth and community, with particular attention to the intersection of race and class in neighborhoods and the spatial politics around urban change. Students will examine major themes in urban sociology, including theoretical approaches to urban phenomena, cities and community, urban inequality, and urban public space. This course emphasizes how urban processes affect individuals, groups, neighborhoods, and cities.
