SOC 3055 Classical Sociological Theory 3.0 Credits
This course examines the major theorists and concepts that comprise the canon of classical sociological theory. Focusing on the emergence of the sociological imagination in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it explores how key thinkers, including Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Émile Durkheim, analyzed the transformations of modernity. The course also highlights influential but historically marginalized voices such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Ida B. Wells. Through close reading and interpretation, students examine competing frameworks, core concepts, and the moral and analytical questions shaping the discipline, while critically assessing sociological theory as a project and the development of sociology as an academic field.
