THTR 2122 History of Broadway Musicals 3.0 Credits
The Musical is one of America’s greatest contributions to the world of entertainment and the center of its development is Broadway. Through class discussions, audio/video examples, and readings, students will explore the development of the Broadway Musical from Minstrel shows, through Vaudeville, the Golden Age, and up to the present moment. The class will analyze the changes, challenges, and advancements of the Musical from an artistic, economic and cultural, including racial, viewpoint. It will examine key shows, changes to the form, societal and cultural impacts both positive and negative, the British Invasion, and important artists and contributors over the years to attempt to discover its current relevance and predict its future direction.
