ULAW 3420 Freedom From and Freedom To: Religious Liberty in the U.S. 3.0 Credits

Despite the official separation of church and state, religious questions often arise and need to be adjudicated in secular courts. In this course students will explore the boundaries of religion and religious liberty, investigating how American courts handle issues that arise in religious communities that use the civil courts to settle disputes. Students will study the ways secular courts religious claims concerning issues such as marriage and divorce, child care and custody, bodily autonomy, and cultural defenses against criminal charges.
