ULAW 3525 Know Your Rights: Police Stops 3.0 Credits

During the 2023 mayoral race the term “stop and frisk” as a policing strategy returned to a place of prominence in the local political discourse. The eventual winner of that contest, Cherelle Parker, ran on a platform of “bringing back stop and frisk.” In light of this resurgence, it is a good idea to focus on just what is meant by “stop and frisk” and interactions between the police and citizens in general. This course will look at the concepts of “stop and frisk,” car stops, and other police interactions. The focus will be primarily on the law (in the form of court opinions) which governs these interactions. This course will also look at how police interactions are discussed in political arenas and portrayed in pop culture.
