WRIT 3740 Writing as Social Change 3.0 Credits
Fundamentally, writing itself is change. How does language mediate understandings of reality? How can work with language make or remake worlds? This course explores these questions through study of social problems and efforts to address them. Students will develop subject expertise around an area of social concern, such as the persistence of poverty, and then draw on that expertise for writing in a variety of practical and exploratory genres. Students learn collaborative writing and work practices, then consider how these practices might also instantiate writing as social change. Expect a class that is both practical and theoretical.
