HMP 6040 Introduction to GIS for Public Health 3.0 Credits
This course will provide students with a solid foundation in acquisition, manipulation, analyses, and presentation of spatial data using a geographic information system (GIS). This course emphasizes hands-on use of data from Philadelphia and other contexts to develop methodological expertise, explore spatial patterns in health, and understand issues of health disparities and social justice. Topics covered in this course include: acquisition of spatial data, data management, geocoding, symbolizing features, coordinate and projection systems, making maps for presentation, and introduction to spatial analyses.

In order to graduate, all students must pass three writing-intensive courses after their freshman year. Two writing-intensive courses must be in a student's major. The third can be in any discipline. Students are advised to take one writing-intensive class each year, beginning with the sophomore year, and to avoid “clustering” these courses near the end of their matriculation. Transfer students need to meet with an academic advisor to review the number of writing-intensive courses required to graduate.
