This course introduces the foundational concepts, tools, and ways of thinking that underlie how businesses use data to inform decisions. Students learn where business data come from, how data are collected and stored, and the essential steps to prepare data for analysis. Emphasis is placed on descriptive analytics as the starting point for more advanced work. Students explore how data quality, context, and presentation influence conclusions, and develop the ability to identify bias, misuse, and ethical concerns. Through work with realistic data sets, students build skills in organizing, pre-processing and exploring data while learning how to critically evaluate the information it reveals. The course concludes with an overview of material that students can learn in subsequent classes on business analytics.
