MUSC 1101 Music Appreciation and Understanding 3.0 Credits

This course offers an introduction to music, covering elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, form, instruments, historical and social context, connections with dance, and a range of genres. Emphasis is placed on developing listening skills and understanding musical concepts. No prior musical experience is required.

Most credits are earned through participation in ensembles, which may be repeated for credit. Additionally, students complete 2–4 credits from practice/making courses and 3 credits in history/culture. Performance teaches valuable skills such as collaboration, cross-cultural communication, team building, and the understanding that individual abilities contribute to a greater whole. Other required courses promote critical thinking and cultural understanding. These skills complement any student’s major and career aspirations.
