OSCM 3260 Operations for Service Businesses 3.0 Credits

Service businesses face unique operational challenges because customer experience is directly shaped by operational quality. In addition to designing, directing, and controlling operations, managers in service businesses need to supervise service personnel, continuously improve processes, communicate with different departments, ensure information is centralized, provide real-time feedback, capture and report KPIs, and establish sustainable workflows. In this course, students learn the theory and practice of managing resources and processes to deliver services to customers. For contemporary management of service operations, the use of emerging technologies and attention for sustainability are essential, so these topics receive significant attention in the course.

The minor in Operations and Supply Chain Management can beneficially be combined with many majors. Relevant tasks include demand forecasting, capacity planning, network design, risk management, and performance measurement. The coursework explores how decisions in such areas affect customer service, revenue, cost, and overall business success. Consequently, students in marketing can better understand how an advertising campaign can affect production requirements, students in finance see how inventory and supply decisions affect short-term capital, students in engineering bridge the gap between design and production, etc. This minor helps students understand what is happening behind the scenes when products and services are produced, sourced, and delivered.
