EPI 570 Introduction to Epidemiology 3.0 Credits

This course presents the introductory principles and methods of epidemiology and provides the student with a basic epidemiologic skill set needed to participate in public health research and practice. By the end of this course, the student will be able to describe the design of epidemiologic studies and interpret published results. Specific topics will include the occurrence, distribution, and causality of diseases; including the calculation and interpretation of epidemiologic measures of disease occurrence and association; the design and choice of epidemiologic study designs; the recognition and mitigation of the major sources of error in research studies (random error, confounding, and bias); outbreak investigation, and the purpose of screening programs and measures of validity of screening tests.

Graduate Minor in Environmental Epidemiology

Graduate students in this minor will develop knowledge and skills to prepare them for work in environmental and occupational epidemiology. Training includes critical evaluation of relevant scientific literature, formulating hypotheses and designing studies to answer questions about environmental and workplace exposure impacts on human heath, planning and conducting data analyses, and reporting findings.
